Social Media: What it Means for Your Business and Personal Branding
Our Communications Chair Karen Parucha will be giving a presentation on social media and its importance as a communications tool for your business.
Karen Parucha has a progressive background in media, public relations, marketing and communications. A graduate of the Journalism program at Ryerson University, she oversaw the editorial content of monthly and bi-monthly trade magazines before making the jump to public relations and communications. She is now the Marketing Communications Coordinator at the Calgary office of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, an international law firm, and she manages the website, social media accounts and other communication tools for BPW Calgary. She is also a regular contributor at Sweetspot.ca, a national online women’s magazine.

Silvia Vidal of Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA) will speak about what her organization is doing to develop the skills of women who are new to Canada.
Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA) was established in 1982 as a non-profit organization to address the needs and concerns of immigrant and refugee women, youth, children and families.
CIWA has developed a reputation for its innovative and unique approaches to providing essential services to immigrant and refugee women. The demand for our services increases with each passing year as Calgary receives the fourth largest intake of newcomers to Canada.
We will also be formally launching the 1 + 1 = the New Power of BPW. We encourage our members to bring their +1 to this event. As well, we are encouraging members to sponsor a CIWA woman so she can be a BPW + 1 and gain networking skills and contacts.

Last week, we heard some very valuable pointers in the art of negotiation. Our speaker Nadine Ryan Bannerman showed us how to develop win-win outcomes. Key points: · Interpersonal negotiation is often harder than commercial negotiation. Don’t get frustrated by the situation · To negotiate well: be prepared, know the market, know your skills, know the needs of the other party · Always, always, always rehearse! · It is important to clarify interests, issues and positions. To create and grow formal supportive mentoring relationships amongst BPW Calgary members that will make a positive impact in professional and personal lives of both the mentors and protegees.
Vision of the Program
To grow and develop diverse mentoring relationships that will have a positive impact on the professional and personal lives of its participants as well as further enhance the supportive and nurturing culture of the BPW Calgary organization.

To increase the membership of BPW Calgary to 45 by January 2010

To support BPW Calgary’s vision of empowering women to reach their full potential
Our Mentors and Protegees
Our mentors are diverse professional and business women employed across a broad range of industries and sectors (corporate, not-for-profit and entrepreneurial) and occupations. They have many years of business experience as well as a variety of interesting life experiences.
Our protegees are BPW members that also represent a diverse group of professional and business women who are interested in developing and strengthening their leadership skills and advancing their careers.
