The Business and Professional Women’s Club of Calgary (BPW) recently attended Bow Valley College’s (BVC’s) annual “Celebrating Student Futures” reception on May 11, 2011, at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Jenny Gulamani-Abdulla, incoming First Vice President of the Club awarded scholarships to three Bow Valley College learners on behalf of BPW. Amongst the recipients were Ruby Day (High School Upgrading), Michelle Roche (Human Resources Management Certificate), and Kayla Steyvers (Practical Nurse Diploma).
The BPW scholarships are awarded every year to three full-time students in business and industry or health and community care certificate or diploma program. The awards, in the amount of $500 each, are presented to female students with academic excellence and who are single parents or primary caregivers.
To date, BPW has contributed $19,000 towards the scholarship program, which is about growth and positive change. It targets BPW’s specific objectives by striving to encourage women to acquire further education and training so that they may engage in business to improve their economic, employment and social conditions.
A total of 53 awards were presented to 108 students at this year’s event. The recipients have been invited to attend BPW dinners to impart their experiences at BVC and share how the scholarships impacted them in reaching their educational goals. This will allow members to see firsthand how BPW plays a role in transforming the lives of women and in bringing about progress within our community.
