It’s time to celebrate our achievements as we continue to work to improve conditions for all women.  We have had a busy year with exceptional monthly speakers covering a diverse range of topics of particular interest to the business and professional women of today.

This month’s speaker is no different. Melanie Leonard, a conducter at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, will share her inspiring story. Melanie was propelled to follow her passion for music, and was undeterred by the challenges before her.

We will share resolutions and nominations for the upcoming year. Members are encouraged to bring forth subjects that fall within the club’s mandate, aims and objectives.

The nominations committee will be appointed and members will be notified of nominations for officers to be elected to the board of directors.  Nominations may be called from the floor as appropriate.  Members will also have an opportunity to communicate their intent to serve on various committes.

We all know the importance of keeping a healthy lifestyle. But it can be easy to lose motivation. Kate Barnes, a fitness guru and certified Can-Fit-Pro Personal Trainer from World Health, talks to us about setting realistic fitness goals, the benefits of fitness for a healthy body and mind and how to stay motivated in living a healthy lifestyle.

Kate Barnes has pursued her passion for fitness and the outdoors for more than 15 years. Calgary born and raised, she spent lots of her time
running, biking, rollerblading and hiking. She has also taken Olympic lifting, core and flexibility training through World Health’s post secondary education program.

In the late 1990s, Kate discovered kickboxing, and her interest in fitness exploded. Kate spent hours in the gym studying Muay Thai under
Mike Miles.

Despite an interest in health and fitness, Kate thought that she might enjoy acting, and studied drama at Keyano College. While she enjoyed stage work, Kate found herself being pulled toward stunt work, and attended the United Stuntmens Association – International Stunt School in Seattle, WA, and trained at The Action Room in Vancouver, BC. The physicality of stunt work was a real challenge for Kate, and she realized that her true passion was teaching and supporting other people through their own personal fitness goals.

Currently, Kate works for World Health and continues to challenge herself physically and mentally.

We all have busy lives and with the holidays and 2011 fast-approaching, we not only need to re-evaluate our goals, but also learn how we can best manage our time more effectively.

Mandie Crawford, founder and president of her own company Roaring Women, and Business in Calgary’s 2010 Woman of the Year, discusses her techniques in achieving a healthy work-life balance.

Dinner will be held at Fireworks Cooperative on Wednesday, November 10, 2010.
