The Business and Professional Women Alberta (BPW Alberta) is a non-sectarian, non-profit, and non-partisan organization that promotes the interests of working women in the Province of Alberta. It is part of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW Canada) which was founded in 1930 with a vision to achieve just and equal status of women at all levels of society where decisions are taken in true partnership with men based on mutual respect for a more balanced and peaceful world.
BPW Alberta is an incorporated and registered society with clubs in Calgary and Edmonton. Members come from diverse occupations and industries with a broad range of work and educational experiences. It is also part of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women dedicated to improving the lives of women globally since 1930. Local clubs exist in the two major cities – Calgary and Edmonton – who host regular meetings with guest speakers and topics that inspire and motivate business and professional women to fulfill our mandate and their passions.
BPW Alberta’s Mission is to develop the business, professional and leadership potential of women in Alberta at all levels through advocacy, education, mentoring, networking, skill-building, and economic empowerment programs and projects around the world. The primary focus is on business leadership skills – to learn from women in positions of influence and power to contextualize current practices and challenges in many areas of Alberta businesses and the professions – so that more women can be empowered to occupy decision making roles.
Priority areas are focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). In February 2022, BPW Alberta was added to the list of official signatories and recognized as a Champion of WEPs. To advance its work, BPW Alberta has joined the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation and continues to collaborate with the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
Both local clubs have active Advocacy and Resolutions Committees that assist BPW Alberta in formulating future policies and lobbying on important issues affecting women and their families.
