Jyoti Gondek, recently elected City Councillor, will share her experiences and perspectives on how women can engage with the issues and organizations that facilitate a path to elected office on April 11. Certain forms of voluntary public service better enable one for success in politics. Jyoti will share how she leveraged her board experience with diverse organizations, and her education, to create her own vision for municipal leadership. Her approach has applicability to multiple arenas.

The evening starts at 5:30, so get ready to network with like-minded women from diverse industries!

Having a family is wonderfully enriching. For the working woman questions abound around managing career and family, starting with maternity leave. This session will address: career management pre, post and during maternity leave; financial and legal aspects to be considered including financial plans, insurance and wills. A panel of maternity leave all stars will share their stories and suggestions to wrap up the session.

At BPW Calgary, we partner with amazing community organizations that support women throughout the city. Join us on February 7 as we celebrate these community partners!

Representatives from Bow Valley College, Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, Making Changes and Servants Anonymous Society will participate in a community panel to discuss the impact our involvement has on their operations. We’ll also hold a Candlelighting Ceremony which honors our national and international connections.

We welcome Jake Stika, Executive Director of Next Gen Men, a nonprofit organization focused on building better men through youth and peer engagement, education and empowerment. Their programs and initiatives promote healthy masculinities and gender equity with boys, young men, men, and people of all genders.

Jake and his partners were inspired to start Next Gen Men after realizing how the traditional ideas about masculinity and manhood they grew up with impacted their health and wellbeing, and the health and wellbeing of people they cared about. By addressing the root causes of gender inequities with open and honest conversations and learning about ‘what it means to be a man’,

Next Gen Men aims to tackle some of the biggest issues facing society today from gender-based discrimination and violence, to social isolation and unhealthy relationships, to poor mental and physical health and wellness among boys and men.

About Jake Stika

As Next Gen Men’s Executive Director, Jake leads the expansion and growth of Next Gen Men as an organization and a movement.

Educated in International Commerce and Global Development, having grown up as an immigrant in Canada, as well as having lived in Brazil, Germany, and the Czech Republic in recent years, Jake has a global perspective on community development and social innovation. Jake believes himself to be a reconnection entrepreneur and is less interested in symptoms, but rather underlying causes. His vision for Next Gen Men comes from observing society today and wondering how to effect change by engaging men and boys for a better tomorrow.

With the holiday season in full swing, there are lots of reasons to celebrate! Join fellow members and friends as we celebrate the holiday season by recognizing BPW Calgary’s 90th Anniversary and the accomplishments of this year’s Wisdom Boost participants.

This year’s holiday social will be held at the new cSPACE, a unique venue in the historic King Edward School in Marda Loop. We’ll be treated to a full tour so you can see firsthand how cSPACE supports communities of artistic, non-profits and entrepreneurs who works at the creative edge of change.

We’ll also be collecting donations for Plan Canada and HUGS (Hope Uplights Giving Strength). Through Plan Canada, we can help improve healthcare for the most vulunerable women and children across the world by providing training for female health workers. Our donations are matched 8:1, so our impact is even more profound. This year, in support of our 90th anniversary, our goal is to provide training to 90 women. Help us reach this goal by making a small donation!

HUGS provides blankets to make a difference in the lives of women and children who need to feel warmth, comfort and security while they go through a difficult time. They help remind them that they are not alone, as they strive to lead lives free from violence and abuse. The program is sponsored by The Consignment Gallery and this year donations collected help support Awo Taan Lodge directly. You can make a small donation, or bring a new blanket to the event to show your support.
