May Dinner – Inclusion in Community with Between Friends

Join us on May 10 as we welcome Katie Fipke, program manager for Between Friends, who will speak to us about the importance of inclusion for those with disabilities and special needs in our community.

Many people with disabilities seek social and recreational activities that are fundamental to enriching self-esteem, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Between Friends facilitates programs with these goals in mind while promoting a focus on shared interests over individual differences.

Between Friends offers children, youth and adults a variety of programs that remove the barriers of isolation and truly function as the building blocks of friendship. They encourage diversity by connecting our community with their fellow citizens with disabilities, providing ongoing development and benefitting all people through the sharing of unique talents and perspectives

Don’t miss out to learn more about this great Calgary organization! RSVP today!

About Katie:

Katie Fipke has been the Program Manager for Between Friends since the summer of 2014.  In her role, Katie is responsible for ensuring that the implementation of programs and services for Between Friends’ members is carried out according to the strategy as set by the board of directors.  She is responsible for understanding the needs of the disability & wider communities to ensure that the program offerings meet the needs of members.  Katie oversees a team of nine, who provide approximately 130 programs in 5 program areas.

January Event – Let’s Talk About Sex with Pam Krause

We are excited to welcome Pam Krause, President & CEO of the Calgary Sexual Health Centre, to our first dinner meeting of 2017 on January 11. Pam will speak to us on how the Calgary Sexual Health Centre aims to normalize sexual health in Alberta through its evidence-informed, non-judgemental sexual and reproductive health programs and services. The Calgary Sexual Health Centre focuses on three main areas: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Relationships and Healthy Communities. Pam will explain each area and the programs and services that support each one.

The evening kicks off at 5:30, so plan to arrive then to network with like-minded women from diverse industries! BPW Calgary is excited to welcome you to a new location for this event, the Kahanoff Centre.

Pam has been with the Agency since 2001, taking on the leadership role in 2004. An advocate and activist on issues related to women’s equality and social justice, Pam has worked and volunteered in the Calgary non-profit community for the past 20 years. Her previous roles include work with the Elizabeth Fry Society, where she advanced the opening of the first half way house exclusively for women in Alberta.

Pam’s leadership has been recognized by being named a Global Television Woman of Vision, and is a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her years of community service. She is one of Calgary’s strongest voices on issues related to sexual and reproductive health. Pam was recently described in the media as one of the only Calgarians who feels comfortable talking to strangers about sex.

We can’t wait to hear from Pam and learn what the Calgary Sexual Health Centre is doing within the Calgary community.
