Celebrating Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

Join us May 8th when Deanna Burgart P.Eng, CET, speaker, trainer, engineer and mentor hosts our Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) event!  She will share her personal story, the struggles of women in STEM and provide her perspective on women in this field.  We invite you to be part of the discussion on how we can champion women in STEM and attract more women in technical fields.

The evening starts at 5:30 with an oppurtunity to network with supportive and like-minded women from diverse industries.  Please RSVP by 11pm, Sunday May 5th to ensure your spot.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

Deanna Burgart is a speaker, trainer, engineer and mentor that has a talent for identifying gaps and providing solutions to systemic, organizational and transformational change. She brings over 20 years of experience and education in energy and pipelines and is passionate about energy transitions and the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UN Declaration of Rights of Indigenous People. She helps STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focused organizations move forward in operationalizing Indigenous inclusion and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

Since 2017, Deanna  has been working on an initiative Indigenizing pipeline curriculum through a pilot project with SAIT and Innotech Alberta, training 60 Indigenous students in Pipeline Monitoring. In 2018, she joined the University of Calgary as their first Indigenous Engineer in Residence.

As a formally trained musician and performer, Deanna believes that incorporating the Arts in STEM will engage future diverse perspectives. She is the President of Indigenous Engineering Inclusion Inc. and co-founder of IndigeSTEAM – A non-profit youth initiative that connects Indigenous professionals and youth in the spirit of mentoring and collaboration. They hosted their inaugural mentor’s leadership retreat in April 2019 at the Banff Springs Hotel focusing on how to better engage Indigenous youth in STEM outreach initiatives.

Deanna is a recipient of the 2019 Evolutionary Business Council’s Unstoppable Award, the 2018 American Indian Science and Engineering Society’s Blazing Flame Award, the 2017 Women of Inspiration Award for a Trailblazer in STEM and Oilweek Magazine’s Rising Star of 2015.

2017 Resolutions Update

Consistent with our mandate “to strive to improve the economic, employment, political and social conditions for all working women,” each BPW club is invited each year to prepare a resolution(s) on what they consider to be priority areas for women’s empowerment in their communities.  The resolutions are drafted by their respective local committees and then submitted to the BPW Canada VP of Resolutions for consideration and review.  All the submitted resolutions are then presented for discussion and debate at the BPW Canada’s AGM occurring late summer.  Based on this discussion, the delegates from each club proceed to vote on the resolutions they would like to adopt as BPW Canada’s advocacy platform for the year.  The Resolutions are then submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office for review and action.

Why are Resolutions important?

Resolutions have proven effective in providing our organization with a VOICE on the important areas where we believe the government needs to take action to help us achieve equality in our society.  (For more information or to review past submitted resolutions, please visit BPW Canada’s website at: BPWCanada.com.)

What are BPW Calgary’s local priority areas?

At our meeting in January, we held an informative brainstorming session where members and guests were able to provide our resolutions committee members with input on advocacy topics. Based on that discussion, the committee has drafted a Resolution on each of the following areas: (1) Increasing the Representation of Women on Canadian Boards; (2) Reducing Implicit Gender Biases and Increasing Women’s Participation and Success in the STEM fields; (3) Increasing Women’s Participation in Politics; and (4) Re-affirming our previously submitted Resolution seeking a Declaration of a National Equal Pay Day in Canada.

BPW Canada National Convention | August 12 – 14

Save the date finalBPW Calgary is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the 45th Biennial National Convention on August 12-14, 2016 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre.  A Centennial Gala will be held on Saturday August 13th at 6:30 PM to recognize 100 Women’s Organizations to mark the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in Canada.
In addition to the business portion of the convention, an exciting program is being finalized which includes:
  1. Luncheon and play “Let Them Howl” as well as an evening reception and entertainment on Friday, August 12th.
  2. Tour to the Nellie McClung House at the Heritage Park with dinner at the Selkirk Grill on Sunday, August 14th.
  3. Lunch at the Calgary Tower and a visit to the Glenbow Museum to view the Mavericks Exhibit which includes Henrietta Muir Edwards as one of the Maverick politicians on Monday, August 15th at 11 a.m.
  4. An 8-hour day tour on Monday, August 15th from Calgary to Banff to view the majestic rocky mountains as our attendees did at the 5th biennial convention in 1935.

Negotiating for Success Workshop – April 30

Many women fail to recognize opportunities to negotiate — about their compensation and roles, about the support they need to be successful, about the resources to get the job done, and about buy-in from their peers and those they lead.

We are excited that Nancy Stapley, Vice President of BPW Calgary, will host the Negotiating for Success workshop for BPW Calgary members on Saturday, April 30 from 10 AM – 12 PM.

This session will draw attention to how women can proactively negotiate for conditions of personal and career success, and assess ways that women may be unknowingly undermining themselves.

In this workshop, we discuss how, by mastering a few basic principles, anyone can become an effective negotiator. In role plays on effective strategies for negotiation, as well as possible compensation pitfalls and how to avoid them, we will explore how women can remain authentic and maintain interpersonal relationships while maximizing the value of their negotiation.
