BPW Calgary's activities around Calgary and across Canada
The Business and Professional Women’s Club of Calgary (BPW) recently attended Bow Valley College’s (BVC’s) annual “Celebrating Student Futures” reception on May 11, 2011, at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Jenny Gulamani-Abdulla, incoming First Vice President of the Club awarded scholarships to three Bow Valley College learners on behalf of BPW. Amongst the recipients were Ruby Day (High School Upgrading), Michelle Roche (Human Resources Management Certificate), and Kayla Steyvers (Practical Nurse Diploma).
The BPW scholarships are awarded every year to three full-time students in business and industry or health and community care certificate or diploma program. The awards, in the amount of $500 each, are presented to female students with academic excellence and who are single parents or primary caregivers.
To date, BPW has contributed $19,000 towards the scholarship program, which is about growth and positive change. It targets BPW’s specific objectives by striving to encourage women to acquire further education and training so that they may engage in business to improve their economic, employment and social conditions.
A total of 53 awards were presented to 108 students at this year’s event. The recipients have been invited to attend BPW dinners to impart their experiences at BVC and share how the scholarships impacted them in reaching their educational goals. This will allow members to see firsthand how BPW plays a role in transforming the lives of women and in bringing about progress within our community.
This annual initiative at BPW Calgary promotes The Walk-In Closet, a program of the Making Changes Association to supply women with a choice of business clothing so they can make a confident transition into the workplace. BPW Calgary members have been collecting and donating their business attire over the last two months at dinner meetings so that they may improve conditions for all women.
On June 4, 2011, BPW Calgary members visited the Walk-In Closet’s new location with their impressive collection and were provided with a tour by the program manager Lillian VanGenderen. The new space has been stunningly created by Albi Homes with high cathedral-style ceilings. An exquisite art piece portraying a woman with endless possibilities titled “Nicolini” was beautifully displayed at the entrance. A fireplace is in the works. As we walked around to the back, we stopped to view the well-lit changing rooms draped with mauve curtains. The warehouse, office spaces, boardroom and kitchen are also included in the layout for their staff and volunteers’ use.
Members hauled in the donations, sorted through clothes and were astounded by the generosity of donors as they hung up and steamed clothing with designer labels such as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Liz Claiborne and more. The Walk-In Closet also accepts accessories such as shoes, purses, scarves, belts, fashion jewellery, as well as new undergarments, skin products and hosiery.
Don’t miss this event next time…. It was a great team-building exercise for members.
Remember, the next time you are spring cleaning: “Someone’s Future is Hanging in your Closet”
