CLUB BUSINESS MEETING

Learn more about the BPW Calgary mission and how it has been fulfilled over the current Club year through its strategic plan. Participate in conversations about how the Club can continue to develop the professional and leadership potential of women in Calgary through education, awareness, advocacy and mentoring within a supportive network. These conversations will lay the foundation for the plans in the new Club year, July 2009 through June 2010. The business meeting is open to both members and guests.

LEADERSHIP SERIES: Women Leaders

What is leadership? What leadership competencies do effective women leaders bring to the world? How can we change the world one conversation at a time? Dr. Nancy Love, Founder & President of The Pulse Institute, will share her insights on this topic. Dr. Love is a well-known author and international speaker who has studied leadership extensively both at home and internationally.

Why are women leaders especially important for business and government today? This workshop will be of benefit to women who are currently serving in leadership roles, those who wish to move into leadership positions or those who want to be leaders in their own lives.

We will also feature Dawn Nason and Lisa Dare, BPW Calgary members. They will share their experience of attending the 53 Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York in March.

53rd Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women

Dear BPW Members,

RE: Participation for CSW53

This is a call for members to participate and pre-register for the 53rd Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW53) to be held on the 2nd – 13th of March 2009, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Please advise your federation or club president,  Sue Calhoun (scalhoun@nbnet.nb.ca) of your intention to attend along with the answers to the following questions. The deadline to receive names will be December 31st,2008

The 2009 focus is on “The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS“. In preparation for next year’s session, the Working Group on Girls of the NGO Committee on UNICEF (WGG) is compiling a list of Non-Governmental Organisations who plan to bring girls to the CSW53 proceedings in March. WGG is planning a series of events that will focus on the impact of caregiving and HIV/AIDS on the girl child and intends to include girls as panel and parallel event presenters, and to engage girls as active audience participants.

There will be much information to follow with regards to CSW53 and all the exciting BPW Events planned for 2009 – workshops, seminars and social gatherings that BPW members are warmly invited to participate.

Guest speaker: Sue Calhoun, BPW Canada President, 2008-2010

Learn about the BPW Canada and its mission which includes its component on advocacy and awareness of women’s issue. Sue will share her insights, knowledge and involvement of BPW Canada on its priority area of Income Equity For Women.  Also, participate in the long standing BPW tradition, the Candle Lighting Ceremony, which demonstrates the international reach of the BPW organization.
