May 8, 2013: Business Meeting, Election, and Annual Book Drive

The theme we started with in 2012 was Transforming Vision into Reality, and collectively we were able to realize the impact on the ground by marking Equal Pay Day in Calgary, the World’s First International Day of the Girl, and submitting a powerful resolution to BPW Canada on human trafficking.

At the last business meeting, our goal was to build capacity at the executive level and we are now in a strong position to continue transforming our vision into reality.

As a woman in business or in the professions, let your voice be heard on May 8.  How can BPW Calgary influence government, businesses and corporations to improve economic conditions of women?  How can we attract and retain competent women to lead our club’s mentorship program?  How can we embrace women entering the workforce to build their confidence and step up the corporate ladder?  How can we all strengthen our professional and personal development and above all… how can we have fun while doing all this???  Let your ideas formulate the club’s strategic plan for the upcoming year.

RSVP by Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by emailing [email_info] to reserve your spot or for immediate confirmation REGISTER ONLINE using the form to the right. Also note our dinner location and cancellation policy in the sidebar.

The evening will begin with election and installing of new executive officers.  It will end with a facilitated discussion to prepare for 2013/2014.  Dr. Toni Reid, BPW Member and Naturopathic Doctor, will discuss stress management and women’s health during dinner.  We will also be renewing memberships and spreading the spirit of reading through our annual book drive to support the Servants Anonymous Society of Calgary in providing long-term programs, ongoing support, hope and wholeness to young women who are victims of, or are at risk of, sexual exploitation.

Equal Pay Day: March 18, 2013 at Noon in the Olympic Plaza

Equal Pay Day

Special
Event
We will not be hosting a dinner in March — instead join us downtown on March 18!

Equal Pay Day marks the end of the 420 days that Canadian women must work to earn the same wage that their male counterparts earn in just 365 days.  In Canada, in 2008, women who worked full-time, full-year earned $0.71 for every $1.00 earned by men working the same period, resulting in a “wage gap” of 29 cents.

According to Stats Can Women’s Economic Wellbeing 2011, despite Equal Pay and Pay Equity legislation, income equity is not a reality in Canada with women in the workforce still earning only a percentage of what their male counterparts earn – on average, less than 80%.

Join Us March 18

To show your support for Equal Pay Day, wear red on March 18.

Drop in with your colleagues, friends and family to join us at noon at Olympic Plaza near the Women are Persons monument.

Visit our Equal Pay Day project page to access the Equal Pay Day presentation, brochure, and information sheet, as well as a guide to managing compensation pitfalls.

BPW Calgary Has Updated Its Website

The BPW Calgary website has been given a facelift!

The new look is more closely aligned with the BPW Canada website, particularly the colour scheme. While we’ve made minor updates to the content organization and club pages, we made sure to keep the historical record of past meetings and events.

You’ll notice the following changes:

  • You can now RSVP and pay for dinner meetings online. This saves us all time at the dinners and allows you to use any credit card to pay (a frequent member request).
  • We are growing our email newsletter list by allowing new recipients to subscribe directly on the website.
  • Our social media links are easier to find (they’re in the footer of every page).

In future months, we will be adding a members-only area and processing new and renewed memberships online.

We’d love your feedback and suggestions. Please email your comments to [email_communications].

As VP Communications, I was happy offer the services of my web design and development company, Arch Web Marketing, for the website revamp.  Hope you like it!  – Jennifer Feurer

February 13, 2013: Igniting Change and A Way Forward

On Wednesday, February 13, 2013 BPW Calgary members will come together to participate in a special tribute to the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, which unites women around the world.  The official candle lighting ceremony was conceived by Dr. Lena Madesin from USA and evokes historical memories, the many accomplishments and honours today’s achievements.  Join us as we celebrate outstanding women in our community.

Jennifer MartinOur keynote speaker, Jennifer Martin, President and CEO of TELUS Spark, will share how her overall vision of a next-generation science centre altered the long-standing model of science centres.   Jennifer’s leadership and courage to ignite change in our community led to the completion of the first new purpose-built science centre in Canada in over 25 years.  Learning has changed dramatically in the last 20 years and the Telus Spark symbolizes a way forward with open experiences.
